What is a writ of prohibition?

Writ & Administrative Law

Prohibition, or प्रतिषेध, prevents a public authority, tribunal or other body from continuing or commencing an action that is beyond its legal jurisdiction or otherwise unlawful.

It is mainly preventive. Certiorari generally addresses a decision already made, while prohibition aims to stop unlawful action before completion.
