Can a cooperative accept savings from anyone?

Cooperative Law

Generally, no. Section 50 states that a cooperative may accept and mobilize savings from its members and provide loans to members. A cooperative should not operate as an unrestricted public deposit-taking institution merely because it accepts savings.

Savings-and-credit activity is also subject to regulatory directions and standards.
